Arts Administration Internship (Upper East Side, USA)

Portrait of America is a NYC-based organization that produces monumental public art exhibitions in cities across the country. We are currently seeking an arts administration intern for the fall semester (Sept.- Dec.). The intern will be expected to work a minimum of one day each week. The schedule can be adjusted to meet the credit requirements of the intern’s university where applicable. A daily stipend will be discussed.

The ideal candidate is a highly motivated individual currently enrolled in (or who has recently completed) a BA/MA in Arts Administration (non-profit track preferred but not required). Undergrads enrolled in their final year of a business administration or marketing degree are also encouraged to apply.

Desired Skills:
• An understanding of the visual arts and their impact on a community
• An understanding of gallery/museum/arts institution organizational structure
• Exhibition/event production experience is a plus
• Keen management & organizational skills
• Outreach skills- sponsorship and audience-building
• Financial skills- this includes experience with budgets, fundraising & grant writing
• Marketing skills
• Social networking skills- Facebook, Twitter, blogging
• An interest in: non-profit arts initiatives, community engagement, photography, documentary video, interactivity
• A can-do attitude!

Expectations of the Position:
• Devise a formalized business plan & fundraising strategy to produce a profitable national series of interactive, community-directed public art installations
• Devise outreach methods- identify grant opportunities, corporate & individual sponsors, in-kind donors/suppliers
• Audience Development- Strategize how POA can utilize various media platforms- TV, web, books, audio tour- to connect with a national audience
• Facilitate Government & Corporate involvement
• Develop a strategy for working with arts & cultural institutions in a host city
• Present ideas for community programming/tie-ins with schools in a host city
• Develop methods to increase blog and website traffic

Software Requirements: Photoshop, InDesign, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, CRM Software

Preferred: Adobe CS4, Expression Media, Daylite, ImageIngester Pro3, Excel, Keynote, PowerPoint, Final Cut Pro, Adbase, Cooler Email
